The 2019 Billboard Music Awards aired on Monday night, and it was filled to the brim with incredible performances! People can’t stop obsessing over the Jonas Brothers’ return, which featured a medley of their new single, Sucker, Nick’s song, Jealous, and DNCE’s song, Cake By The Ocean. It was a truly iconic return to the stage! And another performance people can’t stop talking about, unsurprisingly, is Taylor Swift’s.
Swift performed her new song, Me!, featuring Panic! At The Disco’s Brendon Urie, and it was more colorful than you could imagine! Swift was wearing a sparkly, sequined mini dress, while Urie was wearing a shiny, silver suit covered in paint splatters. And honestly, we’re obsessed with it!
All of her dancers were also wearing suits of every color of the rainbow, all of them pastel, of course! Urie even floated on stage with an umbrella! The entire performance was a live version of her gorgeous, entrancing music video, though this featured a marching band, all in suits of pastel pink! This video could not be more visually stunning. But the singer’s performance is stirring some controversy, and it’s all because of the marching band.
Many viewers couldn’t help but draw comparisons to a performance by the Queen herself, Beyoncé. And looking at it again, it’s hard to miss the similarities between this performance and Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance. It isn’t just the marching band, but the pops of pink and even Swift’s outfit is reminiscent of some of Queen Bey’s most iconic outfits. And we can’t deny that some of the lighting techniques were also a little too familiar.
But was Taylor Swift intentionally copying the singer’s performance? We don’t think so. At least, we hope not! After all, many performers over the years have used similar affects, and including a marching band is far from unheard of. Taylor Swift wasn’t the first, and she certainly won’t be the last! While neither singer has yet to respond, all we can hope is that the similarities are a coincidence, and nothing more.
