On Friday morning, Netflix released the first trailer for their new thriller, The Silence, starring Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka. And the trailer is nothing short of intense. The Silence, based on the novel of the same name, takes place in an apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic version of our world. A species of devastating creatures, who have been breeding in darkness for decades, are wreaking havoc on humanity. They hunt humans by sound, which makes every noise a danger to your life. One family must try to survive not only this species, but a dangerous cult who has taken an interest in their 16 year old daughter, who lost her hearing when she was younger. But can they survive both of these threats?
While the premise sounds intriguing, and the trailer was certainly action-packed, many couldn’t help but draw comparisons to recent films with a similar plot, such as A Quiet Place and Netflix’s own Bird Box. It begs the question, is this concept played out?
Firstly, let’s get one thing out of the way. A Quiet Place was released last year, whereas the book, The Silence, was released in 2015. So for those making the assumption that Netflix is ripping A Quiet Place off, that can’t be the case. As for the concept? We’ve seen this happen far too often. A fantastic concept that is just run into the ground. It happened with vampires, it happened with post-apocalyptic young adult novels, and too many other things to count. That isn’t to say that those books or films aren’t great. But people get tired of seeing similar concepts back to back.
I don’t think this is a question of creativity or originality. We know Netflix is capable of both of these things, we’ve seen it countless times. And the lineup in The Silence is unquestionably talented. If the film focuses on the cult aspect, rather than just the creatures, it could be the breath of fresh air people are looking for. If not, it could still be fantastic, but audiences likely won’t be recommending it. Either way, we can’t wait to see what they do with it.
