HBO has always been rather secretive about its hit fantasy series, Game Of Thrones, but never more so than in their final season. Season 8 is set to premiere in just a few weeks, and fans know very, very little. In fact, there were multiple endings shot for the series, just in case any set photos leaked! All of this mystery surrounding the final season makes the latest news even more shocking. One week after the finale airs, HBO is premiering a 2 hour documentary on the making of the final season.
That’s right. 2 hours of behind the scenes footage of what is said to be the most intense and emotional season yet. The final season. And the title will both make you tear up and give you major goosebumps. The documentary is titled Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch.
If you’re anything like us here at Fiction’s Mistress, you’re likely as excited as you are worried. This show has meant so much to all of the fans, and it’s known for making its audience cry. Game Of Thrones has never shied away from a good twist, or from killing off a popular, beloved character. And whether our favourite characters survive the season or not, we’ll have to say goodbye to everyone by the end. Even if we get the ending we want (which is, let’s be honest, fairly unlikely), it’s still going to be bittersweet. And The Last Watch will most definitely hold the same tone. HBO told us a little of what we can expect.
“[It] delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland.
Made with unprecedented access, The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers. Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.”
Goodbyes are never easy. And saying goodbye to Game Of Thrones is going to be nothing short of agonizing. We’ve grown to love these characters and this world so much. We can only hope that the finale gives us somewhat of a happy ending. And if not…well, at least we have the documentary.
The Last Watch is directed by Jeanie Finlay and will be her eighth feature film.
Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch Will Air May 26 On HBO.
