Guardians Of The Galaxy and Marvel fans, it’s time to rejoice! It has just been announced that James Gunn is back to direct Guardians 3!
Many of you will remember that back in July of last year, decade-old tweets resurfaced from Guardians Of The Galaxy 1 & 2 writer and director James Gunn. The tweets joked about abuse and rape, and understandably, the public was not happy. And neither was Disney. But it shocked everyone when the studio went as far as to fire Gunn, even after his public and sincere apology. Everyone seemed to be of the same mind. That while Gunn’s past tweets were certainly inexcusable, they were over a decade old. He admitted he was in the wrong, that he shouldn’t have written what he did, and almost everyone was willing to move on. His apology was enough for everyone but Disney.
The studio stood by their decision, seemingly even after DC swiped him up to write and direct The Suicide Squad. Fans were getting increasingly nervous, and the future of the Guardians franchise seemed rocky at best. Guardians stars Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, and Dave Bautista came forward defending Gunn, and the stars even signed an open letter begging for his return. And as we just found out, Disney was listening.
It was confirmed on Friday that James Gunn has been rehired by Disney to direct Guardians Of The Galaxy 3, the script for which he has already written. The decision was reportedly made months ago, in fact, shortly after Gunn was fired! Why the studio waited until now to confirm his return is uncertain, but what we do know is that production will begin as soon as Gunn wraps The Suicide Squad. And we here at Fiction’s Mistress couldn’t be more excited!
Gunn sent out this heartfelt tweet earlier on Friday in response to all of the support.
We’re welcoming Gunn back with open arms, and are tremendously excited to see where he next takes the franchise.
The Suicide Squad Hits Theaters August 6, 2021.
