Everyone’s favourite fantasy series, Game Of Thrones, is known for holding nothing back. From the characters themselves to the epic battles, the elaborate sets to the beautiful costumes, nothing is left to the wayside. The wigs are yet another perfect example of the show’s attention to detail. And as it turns out, it isn’t just the wigs, but the actors’ real hair that receives a lot of attention…but not in the way you’d think.
In a recent interview with InStyle, Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in the show, revealed that starting around Season 5, she was asked not to wash her hair for the duration of filming.
Yes, you read that right.
In case you don’t know, Thrones tends to film for months at a time. Up to 7 months, in fact. Can you imagine not washing your hair for that long? Apparently, it’s as disgusting as it sounds.
-Sophie Turner
“Well, for the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl. Towards season 5 they started asking me to not wash my hair and it was really disgusting. Now I wear I wig so I can wash my hair whenever I want, which is nice. But yes, for a couple of years I was living with pretty greasy hair…we would have the snow machines going so we would have little snow paper particles that would get stuck in the grease. It was disgusting.”
She isn’t the only one, either! A lot of her male costars also are forbidden from washing their hair for the duration of filming to really give off an authentic look. And it works! Of course, Turner will be wearing a wig in the eighth and final season now that’s back to blonde, so she’s finally free to wash her hair again! She’s earned it!
