A few months ago, you may remember that I named A Star Is Born the movie of the year. In fact, I said that it was, hands down, one of the best films of the decade. And months later, I still stand by that statement, for I still get shivers every time I think of it. Every time I hear one of the songs, every time I think about that scene, I tear up. And it’s certainly not common for a film to leave that much of an impact on so many people. Which is why it comes as no surprise that when the Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday morning, A Star Is Born was among the films nominated for Best Picture (Drama).
But that isn’t the only nomination this film nabbed. No, not by a long-shot. The song Shallow, which became something of an overnight hit, has been nominated for Best Original Song. Lady Gaga has been nominated for Best Actress (Drama), which also comes as no surprise. She poured her soul not only into the music, but into every second of her performance. We fell in love with Ally after only a few minutes of knowing her thanks to Gaga’s incredible performance, and we couldn’t be more excited for her. But the film received one nomination that has us more excited than any of the others, and that is Bradley Cooper’s nomination for Best Director.
Cooper also received a nomination for Best Actor (Drama), which like Gaga’s nomination, is far from surprising. This was, by far, Cooper’s best performance. But it is his directing that truly stole the show. This film was Cooper’s first time ever stepping behind the camera as director, and it is rare that we see such success in a beginner. But Cooper’s dedication and passion towards both the story and the characters pay off in every single shot. Anyone who has seen the film will agree. When a director is able to capture such raw emotion, leaving the audience in tears, with just seeing the hands of a character (you know what scene I’m talking about), it is not something to be overlooked. When you walk out of a two hour film feeling like you’ve known the characters for years, it is not something to be overlooked. Cooper directed with such intense, beautiful and unashamed intimacy, resulting in a powerfully moving film. An impressive feat on its own, even more so considering this was his first time directing. We could not be prouder or more excited for Cooper’s nomination, and we know all who have seen A Star Is Born will agree.
The Golden Globes Will Air On January 6, 2019 On NBC.
