In a world of remakes, some excellent, some sub-par, Mary Poppins Returns seems to be exactly what the doctor ordered. It is, truly, more of a sequel than remake, and that’s what will undoubtedly make it so successful.
The first trailer for the film, set to hit theaters just before Christmas of this year, dropped Monday morning, and it looks even more magical than the original. The film takes place years after the first, when the Banks children are all grown up with children of their own. But they’ve fallen on hardship of late, and of course, Mary Poppins can’t have that. She returns to look after the parents just as much as the children, and remind them of the magic that exists in the world.
Emily Blunt is stepping into the title role, but she isn’t the only big name attached to this film. Mary Poppins Returns features an all-star cast, from Lin-Manuel Miranda to Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw to Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters to Angela Lansbury! We’re even seeing the return of Dick Van Dyke, who some of you will remember from the original Mary Poppins!
If the trailer is any indication, this film is going to be positively breathtaking. The tone promises to stay true to the original while also bringing its own flair. And the cinematography…well, just watch the trailer and see for yourself! This is definitely one you don’t want to miss.
Mary Poppins Returns Hits Theaters On December 19th, 2018.
