The film industry is known for its whitewashing, even now, in the 21st century. So, it’s no surprise that the announcement of a live-action Mulan film came with more than just excitement, but also trepidation. After all, look at recent films like Ghost in the Shell or The Great Wall. Scarlett Johansson and Matt Damon may be great actors, but we all know those lead roles should have been given to actors from the actual respective cultures. Which made Disney’s casting announcements all the more exciting.
Liu Yifei is stepping into the role of Hua Mulan, a woman who disguises herself as a man and joins the military so her father won’t have to. She goes on to become one of China’s most legendary warriors. The live-action film focuses on the same plot as the 1998 animated Disney film. The story of Hua Mulan is, after all, one of China’s most popular tales. And we’re over the moon that Disney is doing it right. Liu Yifei has had her fair share of experience in martial arts roles, so there’s no question that we’re going to see some truly epic fight scenes from our heroine. Take a peek at our first official look!
The film is directed by Niki Caro, the woman who also directed The Zookeeper’s Wife, not to mention the fact that three of the four screenwriters of the film are also women. Excited? We definitely are! Though the film just began production a few days ago, we’re already counting down the days until its release. Or at least, until we get to see the trailer!
