“Abby And Tabby Alone In The Desert” Is The Quirky, Empowering Film We Need

Some of you may remember that last year I had the pleasure of interviewing Jessica Martin about her project, Abby And Tabby Alone In The Desert, which she not only wrote and directed, but starred in as well. At the time, the project was still in early developments, but I’m happy to announce that the film is officially available to stream on Seed&Spark! And after watching it, I have to say, this cute, quirky short has absolutely stolen my heart.

Abby And Tabby is an interesting but perfect blend of science fiction and buddy comedy. Abby is driving through the desert, trying to escape her abusive husband, when she comes across Tabby, completely naked in the middle of nowhere. Tabby has returned to Earth ten years after being abducted by aliens, and is now running from her former cult. Though they have a bit of a rocky start, this meeting is the best thing that could have happened to either of them. These two women are going to save each other, and they’re going to have a great time doing it.

Abby and Tabby is hilariously unique, to be sure, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a film about two women who are struggling and raise each other up. It’s about two women who, when they really have no reason to, show kindness and compassion to each other. Yeah, there are aliens involved, which is awesome, but even if that’s not your thing, this is still a film you can enjoy. It’s still a film that will both break your heart and make you chuckle. And by the time the credits roll, you can’t help but feel empowered.

The entire cast of this film is fantastic, but Ashley Lenz (Abby) and Jessica Martin (Tabby) give particularly stunning performances. Abby is easy to empathize with from the very first minute. She’s an underdog, and just wants to build a better life for herself. She has so much love to give, Lenz makes that abundantly clear in her raw portrayal. You can’t help but root for her. And then there’s Tabby. Certainly the more eccentric of the two, what makes Martin’s performance so memorable is the fact that for the first ten minutes of the film, she doesn’t utter a word. Yet she is able to convey so much emotion, so much pain, and I really applaud her for that.

Abby And Tabby isn’t just putting women in the forefront onscreen, either, they’re also making sure they get their voice behind the camera. Not only did Martin write and direct it herself, she made sure that many of the crew members would be female.

“I made a point to try to find female crew members first. Once I put some feelers out, I was overwhelmed by how many incredible and extremely qualified women are out there. So any arguments I hear that there aren’t enough women to hire, I can send them an actual list of women to contact.

Doing research watching other films, I’m even more excited to have several woman on board to contribute to a strong female gaze. Any time I watch a scene with female nudity or sexuality, I can tell right away if it was directed by a man or not. We are so used to seeing the world through a male gaze, that most people aren’t even familiar with the term. This may be a very small film in the scheme of things, but I’m glad that it can be part of the changing tide of female-centric cinema.”

Abby and Tabby is a fun, quirky, 35 minute film that so many people can enjoy. Whether you love aliens, you’re a comedy buff, or you’re looking for something fresh from the female perspective, Abby and Tabby is for everyone. And it passes the Bechdel Test!
