Marvel has never been afraid to give fans what they want, so when it was teased that Doctor Strange would appear in Thor: Ragnarok, the internet began to freak out. After all, they had to have Doctor Strange and Loki meet, right? Having Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston in the same movie together is just too good of an opportunity to pass up! And as it turns out, Marvel agrees.
The scene is brief but hilarious, and surely teases what’s to come in Infinity War. When Thor and Loki return to Earth to find their father, they discover the home Loki left him in has been demolished. And amidst their playful bickering and Thor taking selfies with his fans, Loki suddenly disappears into the ground. What’s left in his place is an invitation, and that’s where Thor meets Doctor Stephen Strange.
In simple terms, Stephen is severely unhappy about Loki being back on Earth. And who can blame him? To say that Loki’s been a threat to the world would be a bit of an understatement. But Thor likes having Loki on Earth about as much as Stephen does, so he promises that as soon as they find Odin, they’ll be on their way back to Asgard. Stephen’s only too happy to help, so they start hitting the books. Literally. Walking is, after all, such a waste of time for Doctor Strange, so he transports himself and Thor around the library. The process, as it turns out, is a little disorienting.
After Thor discovers Odin is in Norway, he’s about to head out when he figures he should probably get his brother back. Stephen conjures a portal in the air and Loki comes flying out of it, smacking face-first onto the ground. “I have been falling,” he says, “FOR THIRTY MINUTES!” The fact that Stephen could’ve just locked him away like everyone else does but instead chose to just have him fall in space for half an hour is one of the best parts of this movie. Stephen just doesn’t care, and it makes Loki care so much more.
“I think you can handle things from here,” Stephen says to Thor. Loki immediately stands up and pulls out his knives.
“Handle me? Who are you? You think you’re some kind of sorcerer? Don’t think for one minute, you second-rate…”
…And that’s when Strange summons another portal and throws the brothers through it, causing Loki to fall on his face, yet again.
The truth is that seeing pretty much anyone from Earth interacting with Loki is always a laugh. For the longest time he was the villain and now…well, he’s still not necessarily the best person, but he’s not evil. He just likes to have his fun. But with Doctor Strange it’s especially funny because he’s not the only one with tricks up his sleeve. It’s a bit more of an even playing field. We can only hope that this scene was a mere teaser for the incredible tricks these two will get up to in Infinity War!
