From ‘Justice League’ To ‘Captain Marvel’: The Big Superhero Reveals From SDCC 2016

Another year has gone by that I have not attended San Diego Comic Con. If you’re in the same boat as me, perhaps you already know what I’ve been doing all weekend.

Mainly this:

And this:

And then I convince myself that one day I will finally walk through those hallowed halls and this happens:

But I digress.

The thing about SDCC is that it’s so big, you don’t even have to be present for its awesomeness to touch you. So many trailers and announcements were made this weekend, there’s no way for me to cover them all. But here are some of the biggest Superhero things that happened this weekend.

Black Panther Cast

Joining Chadwick Boseman is Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, a possible love interest/villain for the film. Michael B. Jordan will be playing Black Panther’s nemesis Erik Killmonger, and Danai Gurira as Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje, Black Panther’s bodyguards. Based on this cast and the small teaser we got from the end of Captain America: Civil War, there’s no question that this film is going to be fantastic. And do I need to even mention how huge this is for diversity?? I don’t think so.

Brie Larson Is Captain Marvel

IT’S OFFICIAL!! Brie Larson has been confirmed as Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel!! The world collectively lost its shit, some out of disappointment and anger, some out of pure, unadulterated excitement. But either way, Larson’s talent cannot be denied, and I’m excited to see what she does with the role.

Hello, Cumberbatch!! Doctor Strange is exactly that: strange. But it’s strange in an awesome way. This is something very new for Marvel, in my opinion. While their movies are epic, they’re also…light, in a way? Maybe it’ll make better sense in comparison to DC. DC is visually very dark. Even when it has comedy, overall it has a much more serious vibe. Marvel is more family friendly and fun, and while it has depth and seriousness, it’s lighter and brighter. Doctor Strange is diverting from that, delving into complex yet brilliant ideas. Not that they need it, but this could be a huge turning point for Marvel.

The cast is looking absolutely perfect. Mads Mikkelsen reminds us that he’s best when he’s bad. And Tilda Swinton, who has caused much controversy, is looking amazing. I personally love her in every role, and I totally have faith in her abilities to pull this off.

I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY. One, bless Gal Gadot because she (so far, at least) feels perfect for this role. It looks like we’ll be seeing her upbringing which will be amazing for so many reasons. We’re going to be seeing so much female empowerment here, which is really exciting. These warriors are all women, and I really just am genuinely happy for these young girls that are growing up going to see this film.

I have to admit that as much as I love him, I was disappointed to see Chris Pine opening the trailer. While he’s great, this is Wonder Woman, and I wanted the trailer to start more focused on her. But this girl is looking strong!! Physically she’s kicking ass, but she also isn’t taking any shit. No one can tell Wonder Woman what to do.

The best part of the trailer was probably the end, to be honest. Diana meets Steve’s secretary, Etta, but she doesn’t understand what that is. She explains it as, “I go where he tells me to go, and I do what he tells me to do.” And Diana replies, “Well, where I’m from that’s called slavery.” Etta then says, “I really like her. Oh I do, I like her!”

Same, Etta. Same.

Let’s start with Aquaman. I’ve heard many mixed opinions. Some people are loving it, some people are hating it, but I think he’s looking incredible!! Jason Momoa is fantastic, and he brings a level of bad ass to everything he does. I love this interpretation, and I think it’s the right move. So far, at least, I’m happy.

I’m also very, very happy with The Flash. I absolutely adore Ezra Miller. He’s so talented, and he’s definitely bringing the comedy to the League! He turns on the lights to see Bruce sitting in his apartment. Bruce says, “Barry Allen. Bruce Wayne,” introducing himself. To which Barry says, “You said that like it explains why there’s a total stranger sitting in the dark, in my second favourite chair.” He later jumps right into the Justice League, excited about the idea immediately. This surprises Bruce, but Barry just says, “Yeah, I…I need…friends.” SAME, BARRY. SAME!

I’m loving the personality, but I’m not quite sure yet on the costume. But I’d rather the costume be bad and the acting be good than vice versa, so I’m not going to complain too much.

Batman is still…well, Ben Affleck. If you follow my blog regularly, you’ll know my opinions on that. I don’t like him as Batman. At all. But who knows? Maybe he’ll get better?

I have a lot to say on the absence of Henry Cavill. Seriously, where is Superman? Yes, he died in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but we all know that there is no way he’s staying dead. You cannot have Justice League without Superman. I swear, if he just shows up at the last minute like, “Surprise, I’m not dead!” I’m going to be so angry. This film could be amazing, but it also could be another Dawn of Justice. We just have to hope for the best, I guess.

And hey, if all else fails, Superman can just join the Suicide Squad.

Henry Cavill Loves Suicide Squad

Seriously, you need to see Cavill go undercover and surprise Will Smith. So funny!!
