So, I’m pretty well convinced at this point that David Benioff, Dan Weiss and the rest of the HBO team are actually trying to kill all of the Game of Thrones fans. This March Madness promo? I am dead (but not actually, maybe like Jon Snow-level dead). We got tons of new footage today, and all of it was extremely important.
There were a lot of quick shots, and a lot of information in a short amount of time, so I’m going to do my best to break it down for you. But before I do, make sure to check out the trailer down below.
“Are you afraid?” the voice over menacingly says. “You should be.”
Our beautiful Mother of Dragons is looking a little more ragged than usual. It has been confirmed that she is in fact a captive, based on this next still, on her about to be pushed. In the trailer, it fades out as she is being pushed.
We hear Tyrion’s quote from the first trailer, about the Great Game, though see new images. It seems that he’s taken over in Dany’s absence, filling in for her, as it were. Honestly, this isn’t surprising. Of her council, Tyrion is the most experienced, especially with politics, and not to mention he’s one of the cleverest, if not the cleverest character in the show.
We have Ramsay with his (or his father’s?) army behind him, building up one of the many battles that look to be happening this season.
Sansa (and what we have to presume is Theon) are running for their lives. This is a plotline I’m really excited for and I really hope we see more of Sansa and Theon together. Their histories are intertwined, but so complex that it would make for such an amazing story, so I really hope this is a team that stays together for some time. And that Theon stops getting tortured!!!
I’m not one hundred percent sure I’m going to get this quote right, but it sounds like the High Sparrow says, “We are sinful creatures. We deserve death. We all do.” And is that just me, or does that look like Tommen that he’s speaking to? It would make sense, and provide an interesting complexity. Who does he follow? The High Sparrow? His mother? Margaery? It seems the High Sparrow and Margaery may come to some sort of an agreement this season, and if that is the case, Tommen may be tempted to go against Cersei. Talk about rough times.
JAIME’S BACK IN ACTION!! Complete with his gold armor, with an army behind him, does this mean he is going to war too? King’s Landing against Dorne, perhaps? Or within the city itself, against the High Sparrows? Either way, there’s no question that the Lannister twins are as determined as ever this season.
While we didn’t see much of Brienne in this trailer, what we did see, she was kicking ass, as usual, and presumably of someone trying to hurt Sansa or Theon.
And again, this may be just me, but doesn’t this kind of look like Theon? Maybe Brienne thinks Theon is on Ramsay’s side? Or maybe this is some random I’m mistaking for Theon? I’m really not sure.
Drogon is looking HUGE while flying over the Dothraki, and I’m going to take a wild guess and say that they are going to deeply regret taking his mother prisoner.
More looks of the big battles to come. This season is going to be EPIC.
Poor blind Arya.
FLASHBACKS. I am telling you. This season we are getting even more proof, if not a full blown confession of R+L=J (click here for more info).
And that is in fact a giant you see bursting through the gate!! Is this Castle Black? Winterfell? I’ve heard a couple different theories around this one, and honestly, I’d be good with either. If he can give a good fright to Alliser Thorne or Ramsay Bolton, I’m game.
I’m not going to lie, I’ll be quite pleased with myself if I was in fact correct about Tyrion being with the other two dragons, Rhaegal and Viserion. Just saying.
Dragon battle? Because YES PLEASE.
And does this not look like the Night’s King? Surrounded by fire? Walking towards the fire? Ice and Fire, anyone!?!? Oh man, I’m excited for the Night’s King.
The entirety of the last half of the trailer has Jaqen H’ghar speaking, and he says, “One way or another, the gift will be given. One way or another, a face will be added to the hall.” And after he says this, there’s a flash of many of our main characters.
Theon is crying. And I would be lying if I said this didn’t worry me. I can only hope they are tears of relief?
And finally, perhaps the greatest, most important moment of the entire trailer.
Bran. The Night’s King. Bran is grabbed by the Night’s King. Is Bran in intense danger!? He must be, right? Or what if they are somewhat twisting a previous event of the books? They did, after all, have a white walker (or something not entirely alive) guiding them, and he was a friend. Could, in some weird twisted way, the Night’s King be, in fact,a friend to Brandon Stark? Or is he in more harm than we can possibly imagine?
Phew….that was exhausting. This 30 second trailer was so much more intense than I could have imagined, and if one thing’s for certain, this is going to be the most epic, best season yet.
