Having officially under a month to go until the long anticipated Game of Thrones sixth season premiere, Entertainment Weekly has released their stunning photos taken by none other than Marc Hom, and from these beautiful pictures one thing is very clear. This season is all about the Queens of Westeros.
Michael Lombardo, HBO programming president has said, “The women are rocking this season…It’s the women that are the hope that we’re watching as the chess pieces move this season, and it’s very exciting.” Honestly, it makes sense. Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, has already said that this season is huge for her character, that she kind of comes into her own. And while we still have some great male characters (Tyrion and Jaime Lannister, Bran Stark, Jon Snow because he’s coming back), many of the main males that we met in the first season that dominated Westeros have met fairly gruesome or cruel ends. It only makes sense that its time for the women to step into these even more powerful roles, and I am extremely excited that it’s happening.
And it isn’t just the ladies on the covers that will be taking over Westeros. Yara (or Asha, for book fans) Greyjoy will be returning to our screens, and while we haven’t heard anything, maybe we’ll see more of Osha this season? Meera and Gilly could also be set up for bigger roles this season, but that’s all speculation right now. No matter what, I think we may finally be seeing some good things happen to our lovely ladies.
Of course, these photos are almost entirely clear of any look into season 6; most of the costumes used are from previous seasons. Cersei is the only one with a very clear difference, that being her new pixie cut (which she is rocking by the way)! But the mystery still remains. For Daenerys and Margaery, who look to be set to spend some time this season, if not all of it, in the hands of the Sparrows and Dothraki, from what we saw of them in the trailer, look far from glamorous. But as for the other women of Westeros, who can say?
So what do the writers have in store for us? Will Sansa get revenge on Ramsay? Will Arya complete her training, becoming a servant of the Many Faced God in the House of Black and White? Or is she destined for something greater? As for Brienne, having brought Stannis to justice, what’s in store for her? An allegiance with the Stark girls and to Jaime Lannister, one can only imagine the drama that can bring. But one thing’s for sure. If the women are indeed the hope this season, we can expect our favourites to escape their horrible predicaments, even if only for a short while. Daenerys and the Dothraki, Margaery and the High Sparrow, Sansa and Ramsay, Arya and her blindness (book readers will know why). As for Brienne, she’s always been a fighter and strong warrior, overcoming the worst of things, and Cersei? Well, who knows who she’s quarreling with this season? My guess is Dorne and/or the Sparrows, but only time will tell. Either way, we can expect great things from our Queens.
